ChatGPT Recommends These Tools — Is Yours One of Them?
We ran 1,000+ queries through ChatGPT asking for "best [category] tools" and tracked what gets recommended. The results are fascinating — and reveal exactly what makes AI pick one brand over another.
The Data
In 20 different software categories, we asked ChatGPT "What are the best [category] tools?" and recorded every brand mentioned. Here's what we found:
- Only 3-5 brands get mentioned in each category (the rest are invisible)
- 84% of recommendations go to just 3 tools
- The #1 position gets recommended 4x more than #2
- Newer tools (2024+) are recommended more than established players
Why Some Tools Dominate
We analyzed why certain tools get AI recommendations and found 5 patterns:
- Clear positioning — AI can explain what they do in one sentence
- Comparison content — They have "X vs Y" pages that AI loves to cite
- Recent updates — Fresh content signals current relevance
- Community buzz — Reddit/Hacker News mentions matter
- Unique differentiators — AI cites what makes them different
The Pattern That Gets You Cited
Tools that get recommended consistently have one thing in common: they've made it easy for AI to understand and recommend them.
- Clear, simple homepage that explains what you do
- Comparison pages against major competitors
- Recent blog content (last 6 months)
- Defined use cases and ideal customer
How to Get Recommended
Start with this checklist:
- Can you explain what you do in one sentence?
- Do you have comparison pages against top competitors?
- When did you last publish content? (If more than 6 months, AI thinks you're dead)
- Are you getting mentioned in communities like Reddit?
- Can AI find your unique differentiator in 10 seconds?
